The potato market has recently been fairly depressed in China as far as sales are concerned. The supply from major production areas and wholesale markets are slow and does not show any improvement at this time.
Data from Sublime China Information (SCI) indicates that the price of potatoes from cold storages in Shandong continues to fall currently. The prices in other areas in north, northeast, and northwest China remains stable though.
Sellers and buyers are caught in a deadlock though. The overall sales volume is relatively small and the warehouses receive potatoes at a slow rate.
Zhang Min, a data analyst at SCI, explains that the overall price of vegetables has been low in the last two months in China. The current low vegetable prices can be attributed to colder temperatures. The supply volume of off-season vegetables are slowly increasing, nevertheless. The current price decrease is expected to recover later on in the season.
The pressure on the potato supply chain will remain in the short term as vegetable production areas in south China gradually enter their peak period. It is difficult to say when the sales volume of potatoes will increase, but it is expected to do so in the coming months.
